Should I Repair Or Replace My Roof?

When facing roof damage, you either replace the entire roof or repair the damaged parts. But that’s not the end of the problem.

  • How Much Damage Do You Have?
  • Have You Had A Professional Look At It?
  • Is It Something Insurance Would Cover?

When you choose to repair, there’s a bigger risk of premature deterioration and paying for emergency roof repair cost in the future. And when you choose to replace your damaged roofing system, it won’t exactly come cheap. Plus, there’s a possibility that you’re wasting the current roofing parts that can still be salvaged.

So, which is which? Should you repair or replace your roof? Here are some things you should consider before calling a roofing contractor.

How Bad Is My Roof Damaged?

It’s important to measure the extent of the damage to your roof. You can do that by looking at your shingles first. A few cracked shingles will not be a problem because you can simply replace them with new ones. After a violent storm, expect that some of your shingles will be cracked or missing. However, you should hire a professional roofing installation contractor to see if the underlayment is compromised. If there’s water leakage, that’s the time for a roof replacement.

Are There Red Flags I Can Look For?

It’s quite simple to tell that your roofing system requires a replacement project. The first thing you should look for is water damage. After a storm or hail, look for signs of water leaks in the attic, because that means your underlayment has been compromised. Next is age. Determine the age of your roofing system to better understand the extent of the damage. After 20 years, most roofs will start to show signs of deterioration. You should also consider the materials used. Slate and metal roofs tend to be more durable, but always include age as a factor.
