Mat Base

Traditionally, the mat base is made of waste paper, cellulose and wood fibers, often referred to as “organic” shingles. Today’s asphalt shingles, on the other hand, feature a fiberglass mat base. Fiberglass has proven to have superior resistance against moisture, which paper-based ones are vulnerable to once the outer layers are worn off. While most asphalt shingles are installed using nails, certain roofing products feature adhesive-backed mat bases, for enhanced resistance against wind and water intrusion.

Asphalt

The mat base is coated on both sides by an asphalt blend, which serves as the main waterproofing element. The asphalt is mixed with mineral “filler” material, which, despite the name, isn’t an extender, but rather improves on the inherent weather resistance asphalt has. It also adds fire resistance to the resulting shingles. This asphalt blend is aerated—basically infusing it with air molecules—to make it flexible and easy to cut during installation. You might be surprised to know that this asphalt blend is not the outer layer. In fact, a capable roof maintenance company considers the shingles worn out if this layer is visible.

Granules

Granules are the most visible part of asphalt shingles. This layer is made from crushed rock, applied on top of the asphalt layer in its naturally uncolored state or colored using the same process for making ceramics. This layer is where certain features are added, such as reflectiveness and algae resistance. Architectural or dimensional shingles are basically stacked layers of shingles, with the top portion especially cut to mimic the desired look, then adhered to the bottom layer during manufacture. If installed correctly, it should provide an unbroken layer of protection from the elements.
