1. Do They Hire Subcontractors? 

Hiring subcontractors is a fairly common practice in the industry, with 9 out of 10 gutter installation contractors hiring subcontractors. The problem with hiring subcontractors is there’s no strict oversight over the quality of their work. When a contractor hires a subcontractor, they’re essentially hiring someone else to do the job you paid them to do. If the contractor fails to vet the subcontractor, the quality of your gutter installation may be compromised. As such, it’s best to hire a contractor with full-time employees.  

2. Are Their Workers Insured? 

You need to make sure all of your contractor’s workers are adequately insured. Otherwise, you may become liable to workplace injury compensations in the future. Make sure to ask for documents or any proof of insurance coverage. 

3. Can They Give You a Rough Timeline for Your Gutter Installation?  

Any contractor worth their salt should be able to explain the specifics of the project to you.

4. Do They Have Any Certifications?

A more reliable way to gauge a contractor’s competence is to check if they have certifications. Certifications are proof a contractor has undergone additional training to increase their level of expertise. Plus, hiring certified contractors has an added benefit: certain manufacturers, such as GAF®, offer exclusive warranties to residential roofing systems installed by certified contractors.
