Single- or Double-Hung: Which Sash Window Should You Get?

Sash windows are the most common type of window in American homes. They are available in two styles: single-hung and double-hung. While fairly similar in appearance, both single and double-hung windows offer unique advantages that make them a great addition to your home. The premier roofing and exterior home improvement company, Advanced Roofing Inc. shares a quick comparison.

Cost Efficiency

Single-hung windows are designed with one fixed sash and one movable sash. Since they have few movable parts, they tend to cost less than their double-hung counterparts. But keep in mind that there are other factors that affect window costs. For example, a single-hung window that uses a premium framing material or energy-efficient glass, will still cost more than a double-hung window that’s made of something more basic.

Natural Ventilation

When it comes to increasing your home’s access to natural ventilation, double-hung windows have the edge over single-hung units. That’s because double-hung windows come with two operable sashes. You can open both their top and bottom sashes at the same time to let warm, moisture-laden air escape outside, and let fresh, cooling breezes into your home. Thanks to their unique design, double-hung windows can help keep your living space naturally cool while improving indoor air quality.

Insulation

Single-hung windows may not be as effective at delivering natural ventilation, but they can offer better insulation than double-hung windows. As mentioned above, single-hung units have one inoperable sash. This creates a stronger and tighter seal in the window, helping prevent air leakage and energy loss.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Both single and double-hung windows can be cleaned from inside your home. However, double-hung windows are usually made with tilt-in sashes, which makes them a bit easier to clean and maintain. Some units also have removable sashes, making cleanup even more of a breeze.
