3 Ways to Manage Stormwater Runoff

Managing stormwater runoff not only protects your property from issues like flooding but also minimizes sediment buildup and pollutants ending up in natural waterways. Advanced Roofing, Inc. shares three tips to get it done properly.

1. Collect the water. Catching rainwater for future use is one of the best ways to conserve water. Invest in a rain barrel or cistern, which you can place directly underneath the downspout, so when it rains, either container can be filled with rainwater. The collected rainwater can then be used to water your plants, especially during the hottest months of the year.

2. Determine where rainwater collects on your property. You don’t want your landscaping to erode every time it rains, so you want water rushing down your gutters and downspouts to be distributed evenly throughout your property. Once you’ve identified where rainwater usually ends up, cover the ground with wood chips, stones, or other paving material. Consider adding a rain garden or planting trees around your property as well.

3. Direct stormwater to the ground. You’ll want rainwater to pass through the soil on your property instead of directing most of it through pipes and drains. In doing so, you clean the water and improve its quality while minimizing downstream runoff. Improve your landscaping to help water sink into the ground better – plant shrubs and other greenery that can thrive on wet soil, use gravel to cover bare soil, and create grassy meadows. Any of these can help promote effective water infiltration as well as prevent the ground from eroding.

To make sure that your home is protected against stormwater runoff, you must also have a well-maintained and functioning gutter system. At Advanced Roofing Inc., we offer custom-made gutters in a variety of finishes, colors and materials. Whether you have gutter issues that need to be addressed or want a gutter protection system to lessen the need for cleaning, we’re here to help.
